Once upon a time in a land very very close there lived a girl called Becky who fixed computers and gave telephone support, and all of her friends and relatives asked her to fix their computers.
One day, after several failed attempts at alternative careers when she was sick to death of broken finger nails, cuts on her fingers, and explaining things like using the mouse mat rather than the screen*, she decided to become a professional software developer, and the people of Beckyworld rejoiced.
After a few years she found herself working in ecommerce, and it wasn't long until all of her friends and family started asking her to build them web sites.
* true story
This section is for all those people who want to know how to flog stuff on the internet, and i'm writing it because I love you, really I do. But mostly because it'll save me a bucket load of typing the next time somebody asks me to look over their website and give them advise.
You see i've always had the policy that my advise is free, but if you want me to do the work for you then i'll charge you. It's different with family of course, I charge them double.
I'm going to use some of the web sites myself and my co-workers have made as examples so that you can see clearly what i'm talking about, and because doing so will count as an unreciprocated link (i'll explain that some other time) and help in some small way to building page rank to our sites, which will help me sell more Beautiful Bath's amongst other things. See what I did there?
Advise is free, and i'll give you plenty of it. In fact, that's the first lesson. If you find yourself reading my blog posts on the subject then you've already fallen prey to my marketting machine - you know who I am, you know i'm a web developer who specialises in eCommerce, and once there's some quantity of articles on this site you will see that I know my stuff.
Blogs are a great way to promote a business' because they drive traffic to your site, they establish you as a qualified authority on your chosen subject, and they give you lots of lovely googleable text for search engine indexing.
OK sure i'm putting this on my personal site rather than on the blog of the company I work for but there is method to my madness here, firstly I already blog here, secondly because here I can phrase things how I damned well like, thirdly because i'm a named programmer - albeit my personal 'brand' is an absolutely tiny one but I have had my name on the cover of products and have some mag covers (well, small text 'also in this issue' type stuff rather than cover pictures but it's something right?), and lastly because the nature of the ecommerce business meens an unreciprocated link to the various sites I want to promote are more important than the branding of the company I work for - which is bye the bye.
If you want my services professionally you'll go through the company I work for anyway - you cannot employ me direct because that would meen i'm working more hours in the day than I want too.
So we're all set up, we know what the mission is. I'm going to help you, it's going to be free, you've had your first tip, and i've added the disclaimer to the bottom which should passify my boss!
