Make More Sales with Good Headlines

You can make more money if your web page has a good headline.

• Rule 1: What's in it for me?
  
  I've said this before, but don't talk about yourself. Talk about your customers. People don't care about you, they care about themselves.


• Rule 2: Get my Attention
  
  If you are writing good AIDA copy then the headline constitutes the first A. 'Attention'. Don't try to call me to action in the headline, the purpose of the headline is to get my attention and to get me to read the first paragraph.


• Rule 3: Lead With the Benefit
  
  The first words of the headline should tell me what's in it for me. Tell me the benefit first. Like this headline leads with "Make More Sales", by using this technique you will sell more because if the benefit appeals I will continue reading.


• Rule 4: Test multiple headlines.
  
  I've said this before, but once you have written your headline test it. Write multiple headlines and see which works best. 'Opinion' should never be what decides anything on a web page, try out different combinations and measure the effect on sales.

To help encourage people to read on, if your headline is followed by a paragraph of text then make the first letter of the next paragraph larger. This will help the eye naturally follow down the page.

And because I always squeeze an extra piece of advice into all my ecommerce blogs here's today second tip. Never tell me what to do on your calls to action.

"Sign Up Today!" or even the "Please Subscribe" button that I have on this blog are both wrong. Instead make your calls to action benefit driven "Get the Latest News" or "Keep Yourself Updated" work much better.

On a side note, yes I would change my "Please Subscribe" button if I actually cared about it, but as I so rarely send out emails I really can't be arsed.

PS: And before anyone points it out, yes I should have called this article "Get More Sales..." instead of "Make More Sales..." because the latter implies effort. I know, shoddy work eh...
