Equality is a matter that is very dear to my heart, I believe in it like lunatics believe in God. I believe equality is not just a wonderful and magnificent thing but also that it is rewarding in itself. It's not a duty, it's a way of being that rewards you with insights into seeing the best in people.
So why is it that 12% of films feature no female characters? Now this in itself is not a problem, assuming that there's 12% of films that do not feature any male characters too? And let's exclude films with the word "lesbian" in the title here as i'm talking Hollywood. Well that's a big fat 0% then.
OK but just over 1 in 10 films featuring no women at all isn't necessary a problem, because the majority of films do feature women right?
Well sure, the remaining 88% of them - but how many of those films feature 2 women? Suddenly the score drops to 63%.
But OK we're not doing too badly here right? That's still over half of films that have female characters who are more than just a daughter/mother/wife of the male lead - because there's another woman on screen for her to interact with right?
So let's see how many films with 2 or more female characters involved those women talking to each other for at least 1 line of dialogue about something OTHER THAN MEN... Now we're left with a paltry 50.8%.
So in all the movies made only half of them portray women as being capable of or interested in something other than men, like I dunno - the PLOT MAYBE?
I havn't found equivellent statistics for men, but i'm pretty sure that it's 100%.
So this got me thinking, Hollywood is basically man porn. Films made by men, for men, about men. It's a total man fest.
So why is it that 3/4 of cinema viewers are women?
