Can You Get to the Top of Google Fast?

Yes. You can do it in under an hour.

My sister came to me recently asking me just this question. I'm currently making her a web site but even though that's not ready yet she's already number 3 in Google.

She is a mobile nail technician, and so the first thing a business owner might think to do when deciding on their Google strategy is some generic searches like "Nail Care".

As you can see companies are already getting themselves straight to the top by advertising. Google adwords are a great tool for ecommerce sites, and i'll talk about them another day, for now let's ask ourselves a more important question.

My sister only works localy, she visits her clients houses so she only takes clients that are within a reasonable driving distance of her home. The Google search result shown above doesn't narrow down the results to the local area.

When somebody is searching for a nail technician they're going to release this too - and the most common response people have to this is to add the name of the nearest town to their search result...

Instead of searching for "nail care" my sisters clients are more likely to search for "nail care huntingdon".

If your business isn't already near the top on a localised search result then you are committing a cardinal sin. You've missed the vast majority of the most rellevent customers you could possibly get.

When I repeatest the nail care search I was immediately struck by the fact that nobody was doing any adwords for it, so i'll certainly be encouraging my sister to have some when the site is finished.

But something else happens when we do a local search, Google has integrated it's maps feature into the search results with something it calls "Google Local".

A few other local companies also had the same idea, but you'll notice with about 30 minutes work my sister ranks #3 in Google. Listing yourself on Google Local is free, and for my sister it has already generated some new clients.
